Brothers,

It is with great pleasure that the Gamma Phi Chapter of Kappa Sigma invites you to our first big alumni weekend since the re-chartering of the Gamma Phi Chapter at West Virginia University. We have scheduled the weekend of April 18th, which is also the weekend of the Blue and Gold Spring Football game. A great weekend has been planned, and we hope everyone can attend to meet the 103 undergraduate brothers of the new chapter. Below you will find a list of all the scheduled activities throughout the weekend. We encourage everyone to come to town this weekend, and witness how strong the chapter has become since our re-colonization. Also, please spread the word and invitation to any brothers that may not have received this message but with whom you are still in contact. Please email me with an RSVP as soon as possible if you are able to attend. Spouses are welcome as well.

Friday April 17th - Golf at the Pines Country Club. We have arranged for 5 foursomes (20 spots) with a tee time of 12 noon. Cost is $55 a person which includes cart. Please RSVP as soon as possible so we can inform the country club if we will fill all 20 spots. Spots will be filled on a first come first serve basis. To RSVP, email me at Ksalnick@mix.wvu.edu, or call at 908-489-7865.

Saturday April 18th- We have contacted the president of Chi Omega about our alumni weekend. Due to the fact that they are our sister sorority, we are attempting to arrange a combined tailgate and banquet afterwards with their alumni and undergrads. There is a very good chance this will be going through. Either way, we have already arranged the following events for us, and if they wish to join they have been invited.

- 9:30 A.M. - Recognition of Brother Daniel “Boone” Smith at the WVU Alumni Center. The undergraduate chapter has donated $250 to the WVU foundation for the memorial for Brother Smith at the alumni center. We will meet in front of the Alumni center at 9:30 to honor Brother Smith.

- 10:00 A.M. - After the Brother Smith Recognition, at the Alumni Center, we will begin our tailgate in the Blue lot prior to the game.

- 12:00 P.M- Attend the Blue and Gold game together.

- 7:00 P.M. - Banquet at The Lazy Lizard. Cocktails and heavy hors D’oeuvres will be provided by the chapter. The bar will be on a cash bar basis. The Lazy Lizard is located on High Street, just before Walnut Street. Dress is business casual

Sunday, April 19th- For anyone that is still in town, we will be holding our spring philanthropy, Sorority Sumo, on the Mountain Lair green. All are welcome to come by and watch a few girls sumo wrestle each other. All proceeds will be donated to Kappa Sigma’s national military hero’s campaign. It will begin at noon.

The active chapter encourages everyone to fit this weekend into your schedules. The Gamma Phi chapter has blown every other fraternity at WVU out of the water over the past year. We have had the largest pledge classes, the highest GPA’s, and the largest chapter. However, we have yet to meet many alumni other then a few of the local alumni that remain active. This is one thing we really hope to change. I’m sure many of you have not seen each other for years. This is a perfect opportunity to get back to town and see some old friends. Please RSVP for this weekend as soon as possible. Ksalnick@mix.wvu.edu or 908-489-7865

The first Philanthropy we participated in was Delta Gamma’s football tournament. A lot of the other fraternities thought we were the new kids on campus, and would not be a problem, especially since we are all so young. (Mostly Sohpomores.) However, as the tournament went on, they soon found out not to take us as a joke. We beat Phi Psi in the finals to take home the trophy.

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity was first founded at West Virginia University as the Pi Chapter in 1883. It was later revived as the Gamma Phi Chapter in 1918, and once again on April 18th, 2008. We will now focus on our chapter’s history over the past year and a half, while Kappa Sigma has once again been an active, chartered Fraternity on campus here at West Virginia University. With this new charter, we plan to lead the fraternal society of this campus back to its prestigious reputation of the 50’s and 60’s, where fraternities were at their prime.

Starting in November, 2007, a group of students at West Virginia University took it upon themselves to start their own fraternity. After contacting several University officials, and representatives from different national fraternities, Kappa Sigma was chosen to be the Fraternity representing these individuals. Starting in early November, we were given a list of tasks to complete in order to petition for our Charter. These tasks ranged from completing community services hours and workshops, to constructing chapter By-Laws and other programs for the chapter.

According to the Kappa Sigma National Fraternity, the average time period for an organization to successfully colonize is approximately 2 years. We were able to complete our colonization period in only 6 months, and completed all the presented tasks with flying colors. We completed a combined effort of 2600 hours of community service, participated in over 26 campus organizations, and met the criteria of a chapter size of over 50 men or the largest on campus. All of this was done by 63 freshmen, still trying to adapt to the college environment. Immediately following this, we received our charter, and returned to our homes over the summer as the 2007-2008 school year came to a close.

Gamma Phi Founding Fathers

Now, as the 2008-2009 school year is under way, Kappa Sigma has returned too campus striving to set the bar higher than our previous year. We have returned to campus with 59 active brothers. We have also returned to campus looking to change the reputation of not only our organization, but every other Greek organization on campus. We believe every man representing a Greek organization should exemplify the qualities of a gentleman, a scholar, and a responsible individual.

At the conclusion of Fall of 08’s formal Rush, we rushed 76 perspective members to our chapter. Out of these 76 men, 46 were issued bids and invited to join our Fraternity. Out of these 46 men, 40 accepted their invitations, and were pledged as associate members of the Gamma Phi Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. 32 of these men were initiated. These are men that we feel exemplify the four pillars that Kappa Sigma governs itself by; Leadership, Scholarship, Fellowship, and Service.

As the year goes on, we plan on continuing this positive trend, while continuing to build a positive reputation for our organization on this campus. It is our mission to continue to develop this chapter to be the most successful fraternity West Virginia University has ever seen.
